Have you learned some Dutch before but are you not sure which course level is right for you?
At Koentact, we use a short Dutch level assessment to help you find the course that fits you best. This assessment gives us a clear picture of your current Dutch skills so we can recommend the right starting point.
Don’t worry, it’s not an exam. The goal is simply to help you join a class where you feel comfortable and can make the most progress.

Every student has a different background with Dutch. Some people learned the basics years ago, while others practice speaking every day but never studied grammar.
That’s why we look at several skills during the assessment, including:
Sometimes your speaking level is higher than your writing level (or the other way around). By checking both, we can give you the most accurate advice about which course suits you best.
At Koentact, our courses are divided into levels based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from beginner (A1) to upper-intermediate (B2). You can read more about these levels on our Dutch language levels (CEFR) page.
If you’re new to Koentact, you can explore all our Dutch language courses to see which format works best for you.
The level assessment has two parts:
1. Written assessment
First, you complete a short written test.
This helps us understand your vocabulary, grammar, and reading level.
You can usually fill this in online before your assessment.
2. Speaking assessment
After the written part, you will speak with one of our teachers for about 15–20 minutes.
During this conversation we might:
Our teachers are very experienced in speaking with Dutch learners, so there is no need to feel nervous.

If you visit one of our Open Days, you can take the speaking assessment there with one of our teachers.
You can complete the written test beforehand, or fill it in at the event. After that, the teacher will discuss the results with you and recommend the best course level.

You can also do the assessment online.
After enrolling for a course, you will receive:
During the call, the teacher will discuss your written answers and talk with you in Dutch before recommending the best course level.
Sometimes it can be difficult to place someone exactly between two levels.
In that case, we will discuss your learning goals together. For example:
Even after the first lesson, it is still possible to discuss a different level if needed. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and motivated in your class.
If you’re unsure about your Dutch level, the assessment is the best place to start.
Our teachers will help you find the right course so you can learn Dutch, meet new people, and start speaking with confidence.
